Palm leaf weaving (llata or llatra) had a great boom in Capdepera in the 20th century with
the creation of a cooperative that exported its products outside Mallorca, but with the arrival
of tourism, production shifted towards creating products for visitors, introducing embroidery
on the surface of the palm weaving.

The embroidery of figures on the palm-leaf surface of finished pieces required the
intervention of specialist embroiderers. This type of decoration evolved from the first buttons
that alternated functional and decorative roles to figurative embroideries: farmers, flowers,
fish, fruit… Over time, these elaborate motifs were replaced by simpler embroideries, driven
by the need to adapt to the low prices paid for the work and the need to produce more to
increase earnings.

In Capdepera and Artà, most master artisans of the garballó palm are concentrated — a
plant found in the mountainous areas of Andratx, Pollença, Artà and Capdepera.

The production of these items is complex. It begins with the manual harvesting of palm
leaves, followed by drying, bleaching or dyeing, and then skilled hands braid them to
produce the perfect piece.
