Mallorca has long been the land of the finest artisan footwear. The 1950s, 60s and 70s saw the consolidation of Mallorcan brands as references of design and fashion at a historic
moment when the Mediterranean creative spirit offered a differentiation highly valued in Europe and America.
The tourism boom dealt a fatal blow to the leather and footwear sector, which by the end of
the 1980s largely chose to relocate part of its manufacturing to other countries.
Even so, a century later, we still find the last remaining places where the quintessentially
Mallorcan shoe — the porquera — is made by hand with quality leather.
