Ornamentation

Mallorcan jewellery is a crossroads of the different cultures that have passed through or
influenced the island. Some ancient models — such as garnet-blossom chains (an Asian model introduced in the 17th century), cordoncillo chains, button sets and cockleshells (mainly the Maltese cross and the Cross of Calatrava) — were incorporated into clothing possibly at the end of the 18th century. The display of such jewellery by Mallorcan ladies led to their rapid popularisation across the island.

One of the most notable jewellery models, already extinct in other areas, is the Mallorcan tumbaga. The tumbaga is one of the oldest pieces of Mallorcan goldsmithing, emerging during the Renaissance at the end of the 16th century. Its manufacture is meticulous and requires advanced technique. It consists of two independent yet inseparable parts, interlocked, with a love promise hidden inside. A unique piece that is still made only on our island.

Thanks to the artisan mastery of the Jewish tradition and their descendants, all these ancient jewellery models and techniques have survived to the present day and have become a hallmark of our land.
