Textiles and clothing

In terms of textile manufacturing, Mallorca has notable artisanal processes:

On one hand, originating in the ancient Orient, the millenary ikat technique was introduced to Mallorca in the 16th century via the Silk Road, where it acquired its own distinctive local
characteristics. Popularly known as ‘teles de llengues’ (tongue-patterned fabrics), they are a
symbol of Mallorcan textile culture.

On the other hand, Mallorcan embroidery was highly recognised at the end of the 19th
century and throughout the 20th century, featuring characteristics that made it very original
and it developed independently from foreign influences, with the typical Mallorcan stitch,
chain stitch and cross stitch.

The aim is to recover the splendour these traditions achieved in the last century and to
support all artisans who, in one way or another, work with or incorporate these techniques
into their products.
