Leather and Hides

Leather braiding became a widespread practice across the island with great productivity in
the second half of the 20th century. Although closely linked to the footwear industry, its
applications go far beyond the world of shoes. This technique gained importance after the post-war period, but it was in the 1960s when the leather industry developed rapidly in Mallorca and braiding experienced incredible growth. If in the 1960s Mallorcan braiding broke into the national market, it was in the 1970s and 80s that it reached international markets, showcasing the high-quality work done in Mallorca to the world — until the last
factory closed in 2006.

The importance of women in the production process must be highlighted, as without them it
would have been impossible to meet the demand for braided goods.
